Changes made to align with practices CMC adopted in the last few years, which also support the intent of the recently passed laws on financial assistance for medical debt. The policy describes CMC’s current process of using demographic software to screen patients for presumptive eligibility before pursuing collections of any kind. The changes also explain how all collections agencies are required to assess each referred account for financial assistance at different stages of the collections process. Finally, the revised policy prohibits any extraordinary collection actions, such as placing a lien on a patient’s primary residence, with the limited exception that civil lawsuits may be filed after meeting a rigorous analysis and determination by the VP of Revenue Cycle or a Director or above in Patient Financial Services.
